Or, Tara Tells The Truth About Getting to Work With One of My Lifelong Sheroes
For the last few days, I’ve been collaborating with Jane Pratt on an original piece about Dave Grohl. I’ve been saying it everywhere, but had you told mid-90s me that this would be a thing that would happen in my life, I would’ve spit my Diet Coke all over my Delia’s catalog.
From pitching the basic premise in a Substack DM to roughly 13298571925601 emails and texts, Jane and I shaped my essay into something I’m very proud of. Jane told me that she had never had a writer hand-deliver her a perfect title and subject, and once it was all done—and this woman has the patience of Job times a billion—she said I was one of the best collaborators she’d ever had. She wants this story to get picked up by other outlets, like Rolling Stone, and she wants it to boost my book sales.
The generosity I’ve received from Jane during this process is unlike anything I’ve experienced as a writer in my adult life. I’ve been tirelessly self-promoting The Sound of Settling, and to have Jane Pratt in my corner is a huge boost to my self-confidence. When you’re so close to something that you care about for so long, you absolutely get tunnel vision. Fresh eyes on this old subject had me thinking about it in a new way.
