Bob Woodward made his bones as a young reporter at The Washington Post, breaking the Watergate story with Carl Bernstein, which eventually resulted in Richard Nixon resigning from the presidency. Woodward has enjoyed a lengthy career of great work and prestige, but something tells me that if we’d had the internet back in 1972, Woodward would’ve sat on the Watergate story until he could promote his book about it.
Because 2020.
Remember when Woodward got an exclusive with Donald Trump at the White House just as the COVID-19 pandemic was about to shut down the world? At the time, Trump told the public it wasn’t a concern, it would disappear like magic, it wouldn’t reach America. However, privately, he told Bob Woodward he knew just how deadly the virus was and seemed to very clearly understand the threat to the public because of how easily it was spread from person to person. He understood it was “in the air,” as we later learned.
Woodward “has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.”
That’s a blurb from a quick Google search of that book, RAGE. Trump knew in January and told Woodward in February. If someone in a powerful government position had told me that the Coronavirus was deadlier than anything we’d ever experienced in the modern era, I wouldn’t have sat on that info just because I had a publishing date to meet in the fall. I would have run to MSNBC and broken the biggest story I’d ever heard. Lying to the public about a deadly disease is essentially premeditated mass murder, so not telling the public they’re being lied to about a deadly disease is akin to being an accessory to mass murder.
Between the time that Woodward got that information and finally shared it with the public a full SEVEN MONTHS LATER in his book, over half a million Americans had already died from COVID-19.
That’s a statistic that should haunt Bob Woodward, but it clearly doesn’t. Woodward has continued to write books about Trump and has continued to withhold bombshells so he can sell books. When Woodward goes on TV to promote these books, no one asks him why he didn’t tell the entire world in 2020 that Trump was lying to the public for SEVEN MONTHS before his book came out. White male privilege is a blight on this planet.
Yes, Woodward is entitled to make a living, but he’s not entitled to keep life-saving secrets from the American people just to make that living. It’s irresponsible, selfish, and wholly unethical to not warn people that the President* of the United States is lying to them about something that can absolutely kill them.
(*no he wasn’t, he was a figurehead because he never wanted the job. Write a book about THAT, Bob, no one will die)
Today (10/8/24) we learned about another new Woodward book about Trump (jeez, obsessed much, Bob?) with GUESS WHAT, another bombshell that probably could’ve helped prevent bad shit from happening or at least helped Jack Smith with his case a lot sooner.
Woodward’s new book reveals Trump encouraged Americans to stop testing for COVID amid a test shortage in 2020, then he secretly sent our tests to Vladimir Putin for his personal use. American people died so Vladimir Putin could have a stockpile of COVID tests. He also shares that Trump and Putin have had at least seven calls since Trump left office, but I’m guessing there have been some late-night texts where Daddy Vladdy is all “U up?” and then we get an all-caps sharting all over Truth Social.
Oh, really, Trump is Putin’s Puppet, Bob? How not at all shocking to learn this.
Trump’s henchman, Steven “Oddjob” Cheung, has responded to Woodward’s new book with typical whiny MAGA bullshittery and bullying, with just a touch of the trademark Trumpian projection language.
Oddjob is going to eventually find out what happens when Donald Trump doesn’t pay anyone’s legal fees, like so many other former Trump associates now facing prison for him.
But ANYWAY, this is bullshit. While everyone on Twitter is rightfully angry about Trump’s preference for Putin over the American people, WHICH IS NOT NEWS to anyone who’s been paying attention since 2015, there’s a severe lack of accountability for Woodward. And that’ll probably always be the case, because some people just get to skate through life while others watch from the benches outside the rink.
I think I’ve made it abundantly clear how much I want a proper book deal for The Sound of Settling. Obviously, it’s fiction and no one’s life will be saved by it (except mine once my deal is signed), but it’ll entertain them and give them a break from the daily garbage fire we live in. Rave reviews keep rolling in along with the demands for a sequel and a streaming series. I’ll just be over here querying agents and tweeting about it and hoping all of the big names who have it will actually tweet about it. It’s just exhausting doing all of this by myself, so if you happen to know an agent, please tip them off that I’m an untapped writing goldmine who’s managed to sell almost 800 books.
Thank you, I love you and I can’t wait to meet you when I go on a proper book tour!
Has anyone ever tried enlightening the trump people that the more/harder one denies something, the more likely to be true. A normal, sane individual wouldn’t even be bothered , sort of like saying, “next question “.
Oddjob should get a regular job. His bloviating on behalf of the most prolific liar in American political history, and that's saying a lot, may someday come back to haunt him. Maybe on his deathbed he may regret his words and actions, and that's a big maybe. More likely once trump disappears or keels over or whatever fate awaits him, Cheung may find employment opportunities scarce.
Also, most of us passingly familiar with what libel is know that if an author intentionally misrepresents or lies, they can be sued. Has trump sued Woodward? Why doesn't he? We know why. Because it's trump who is full of shit, not Woodward. I agree that Woodward's delay in talking about trump's idiotic response to the pandemic is not defensible.
