Tonight I’m seeing the touring production of Hamilton here in Portland for the third time. When tickets went on sale months before the election, I treated myself to a front row balcony seat. Now so many of the lyrics are going to hit different and I will cry even more than I did the other two times I saw it.
That’s going to get an even bigger audience response than the last time this tour hit town.
Hamilton stirs feelings of patriotism you didn’t know you had. And if that wasn’t enough, this is the kind of Resistance the Founding Fathers would have wanted, if they ever could have imagined handing over our democracy to a Russian dictator.
If you’ve never listened to the Hamilton soundtrack or seen it performed (it’s on Disney+ right now), you must rectify that immediately. I wish I could force all of MAGA to watch it, Clockwork Orange-style. “The Battle of Yorktown” alone should be enough to get every American’s blood pumping. The resilient cries of “WE WON WE WON WE WON WE WON!” give me a lump in my throat every time.
Like, I’m feeling extra wicked patriotic now. MAGA doesn’t have the trademark on patriotism, you know. They don’t own the flag or the Constitution. Fuck those assholes for bending to fascism. This is OUR country.
Right now, the world has turned upside down. We need to remember who we are and what the Founding Fathers went through to win our freedom, something they can never take away…no matter what they tell you.
Your assignment for the remainder of the week is to call your Democratic Reps and Senators and ask them to use the upcoming recess to travel to Red States and hold Town Halls where Republicans won’t. We have to get the truth directly to the people who need to hear it the most without it being filtered through the biased media. We have to be the louder voices in the political conversation.
