It's Veterans Day and we're not going quietly
Before I plunge into politics, we’re at a bit of a crisis point because I lost my job writing about politics on Saturday. Like, as I was publishing my last article of the day. The website owner had been negotiating to syndicate with MSN.com, but it didn’t happen, and now it will be one guy writing quizzes, just what the internet needs.
That’s one fewer place on the internet where you’ll be able to find the truth as this site is being inundated with MAGA trolls. Fake accounts? Real accounts? I can’t tell here as easily as I can on Twitter. But just look at this shit from this morning.
I’m not crying. I’m MAD. But more on that in a moment.
I’d had a feeling I’d be losing my job sooner or later because of the impending fascism (again, more on that in a bit), but I honestly expected to hang onto it until at least January 20th. So personally my biggest issue right now is:
I NEED A SOURCE OF INCOME ASAP.
Now would be the most perfect time for The Sound of Settling to go viral, because when was the last time a book went viral?
I sent a copy of the paperback to a lifelong Shero actress who I want to play Georgia (Grady’s mom) in the eventual streaming series. On Tuesday, which feels like fourteen years ago already. So maybe once she’s done, she’ll boost it. Another very famous woman has it right now and she could really help get it somewhere, but I can’t rely on that. I also gave a copy to a very famous guy with millions of followers (not Mark Hamill, although I gave him one too) and he hasn’t helped despite my gentle asks. That one actually made me laugh, because you really don’t know what kind of impression you make (or don’t make) on people until they tell you, and now I know how little I matter to this particular person:

Famous Guy: I’m trying to keep things positive.
Me: Boosting my book would be that. I just sent it to [Famous Actress Woman].
FG: Let me know when it comes out!
Me: I gave you a copy, remember? It’s ok, we’re all traumatized right now.
FG: Thanks for understanding!
[Still does not boost my book]

NOW, on to the stuff that matters to ALL of us.
Since last Tuesday, I’ve had time to cycle through the entire Kubler-Ross stages of grief about three hundred times. I’ve done the things they say you shouldn’t do: self-isolate, sleep too much, let some personal hygiene things slip for a day, and ate more carbs than protein, if I ate at all.
I’m mad. I don’t think they won fairly and I think Elon did some hinky fuckery and I’m not alone in thinking this. The math isn’t mathing. When I called my Rep’s office I was told I wasn’t the first person to call with concerns over election interference and that made me feel better. There is a movement for a hand recount in all seven swing states. I cannot accept that he won all seven swing states AND the popular vote. The data doesn’t support it. Ann Selzer has never been off by more than 3 points. Nothing about it makes sense.

If you’re going to rig an election, you should make it look like a squeaker. People would be much more inclined to accept a win by a handful of votes than a blowout. Unless your intention with the blowout is to make it look like America chose fascism and to make Black women feel even less safe and hate white women more. So Democrats would point the fingers at each other for the failure instead of watching what Elon, Putin, and Trump (WORST. FOLK TRIO. EVER.) are doing.
You expect us to believe Democrats voted for Democrats downballot but chose the Republican presidential nominee out of…spite? In NEW YORK? You think the same person who voted for AOC also voted for TFG? Come on now, Democrats have been accused of a lot of things, but negating our own votes just isn’t something we do.
It bothers me to hear people giving in to fascism so easily, who are talking about preparing for the second Trump term without even questioning the egregious results. These are probably the same people who wondered how the Holocaust could’ve happened, the same people who ask why the Jews didn’t fight back.
Where’s all of your fight now? Did your loyalty to your country end on November 5th? I’m hoping not. Do you really think there was that big of a Red Wave when the exit polls didn’t match the votes, there were bomb threats ONLY in swing states, and the ballots weren’t scanning properly in Pennsylvania?
We are neither hopeless nor helpless. We can take action. We can demand that our members of Congress do their jobs while we still have the White House and the Senate. Demand an investigation and a recount. Republicans brought over 60 challenges in 2020 and so can we. If it turns out that after a hand recount, it still shows that Americans overwhelmingly chose the fascist felon and his MAGA band of merry traitors, fine. But I don’t think it will. CALL YOUR REPS AND SENATORS even if you don’t live in a swing state. But if you do, then also call your Secretary of State to DEMAND a hand recount.
In the meantime, please help your girl if you can. Helping other people always makes you feel better, even if it’s a small help.
